The Zeliangrong people are found in the Indian States of Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. They are of Tibeto-Burman origin and are closely related with the Southern Naga tribes, the Meiteis and the Bodos. Moving from Southwest China in prehistoric times, with the other kindred peoples, they came to Makhel after centuries of migration in Southeast Asia.
