Matthew S. Schroeder, beloved son of Lois and Matthew Schroeder of Griswold died suddenly at his home early Wednesday morning, May 21, 2008. Matthew was 26 years old.
Matthew was a 1999 graduate of Griswold High School and a 2005 graduate of Springfield College. Although he majored in physical education, Matthew developed a passion for working with special needs children and was determined to make it his life's work. He went to be with his Lord before he could achieve this goal. Matthew loved his family, his community and his wonderful network of friends. He was a sports fanatic, who traded the football cleats he wore with pride in high school and college for golf shoes after graduation. Although he never got to correct his slice, he spent a lot of time trying to do so.

Matthew was a member of the Preston City Congregational Church, where he was a member of the Sunday School faculty.

In addition to his parents, Matthew is survived by sister, Heather and her husband, Michael, sister Hillary, his loving dog, Chula, his grandparents, Philip and Clara Hopkins of Preston and John Schroeder of Hayesville, N.C., his second mom and role model, Susan Hopkins-Terrell, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, and the network of friends and other people he touched with his beauty in his special but brief tenure on this earth.

All who knew him will remember that beautiful smile, razor sharp wit and infectious laugh.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008 at the Preston City Congregational Church, 321 Rte 164, Preston. Matthew had previously stated numerous times that he detested wakes, so there will be no calling hours. The burial will be private.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Matthew's name to the Southeastern Connecticut Alcohol and Drug Dependency Center, Sent to: SCADD; 37 Camp Mooween Road, Lebanon, CT 06249.

Labenski Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.
