A Texas Heeler describes the wonderful dogs that are a cross between a Red/Blue Queensland Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog) and the Australian Shepherd (Aussie).

It’s been said that Texas Heelers have the intelligence and aggressiveness of a Blue Heeler, and the beauty and friendliness of an Aussie.

As the lucky owner of one, we’re constantly explaining just “what kind of dog is that….” And that is a wonderfully sweet, eager-to-please, incredibly companionable pet.

FYI: These days, pet stores are promoting Labradoodles (Labrador/Poodle), Augis (Australian Shepherds/Corgis), Bowzer (Bassett/Schnauzer), Kimola (American Eskimo/Lhasa Apso). What may have been, at one time, dubbed a “mutt,” are now very sought-after.

Not all designer hybrid dogs are actually 50% purebred to 50% purebred. Many are bred as multi-generation crosses, as the Texas Heeler often is. People often just call our Texas Heeler a cattle dog, or an Australian Shepherd. Some think he’s a Catahoula (but Catahoula’s have wider snouts).

The "Texas Heeler" is a great family dog, but it’s also a working dog that herds and heels, and can handle a charging cow without a problem.

It may surprise many that Texas Heelers have been around since the early 1960s, but came to greater notice in the mid-1970s.

From the internet: TEXAS HEELER By Al Walker, ARF Genealogist & Registrar

“FOR THOSE WHO SEE AND FALL IN LOVE WITH A TEXAS HEELER: The Texas Heeler’s origin began with Animal Research Foundation; Lucy Guynes, Weatherford, Texas, was the first to register the Texas Heeler with the Foundation, in May 1970 (No. 1, Vol. 1). The Texas Heeler consists of any out-cross of an Australian Cattledog Queensland Heeler and an Australian Shepherd. [As a note of interest, the ARF began registering Australian Cattledog Queensland Heelers back in 1965, fifteen years prior to AKC’s recognition of the breed, and was the first to register the Australian Shepherd, on its merits, back in 1963. To learn more on these two outstanding breeds, please request ARF’s book and video list.].
