On June 10, 2005, Susan Kigula and 417 others petitioned the Constitutional Court challenging the Constitutionality of the Death Penalty. The Constitutional Court declined this historical invitation to end this monstrous punishment that is continually visited upon our brothers and sisters. The court noted that its decision was in conformity with the norms and aspirations of the people of Uganda. In other words, the government of Uganda enforces the death penalty, because you and I believe it is right, and should continually be done until we think otherwise.

On January 21, 2009, the Supreme Court of Uganda, by and large, affirmed the opinion of the Constitutional Court upholding the constitutionality of the death penalty. The Ugandan Supreme Court maintained that the death penalty, as exercised in Uganda, conformed to contemporary standards of decency. The truth, however, is that the death penalty, whether by hanging or otherwise, is an indecent, immoral, cruel, and inhuman punishment. Also, we cannot trust our criminal justice to be perfect in determining who deserves to die on account of criminal activity. IT IS UP TO US AS UGANDANS TO ARISE AND TELL OUR LEGISLATORS AND THE COURTS THAT WE SHALL NOT SUFFER THE GOVERNMENT TO CLOAK ITSELF BEHIND THE IDEA OF THE "NORMS AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE PEOPLE OF UGANDA" TO do SUCH A HEINOUS ACT AS TERMINATE HUMAN LIFE. Let us, in one voice, arise and abolish the death penalty. If our neighbors, Rwanda and Tanzania, have done it, WHY NOT US???
