With the motivation of Sh. S.L. Kapoor, I.A.S. the then Deputy Commissioner of Patiala, Public College, Samana, was established in the year 1969. Under his Chairmanship, the college started providing excellent services in the field of higher education in this predominantly rural and backward area in the district of Patiala. This multi-faculty co-educational college fulfils the educational needs of about hundred villages around Samana in a radius of more than 35 kilometers and is built in a pollution free environment with sprawling green lawns. Presently, the college is functioning under the able guidance of Sh. Dipinder Singh, I.A.S., Deputy Commissioner, Patiala as its Chairman.
Starting with a meager strength of 109 students in the faculty of Arts, this institution has over the years grown into a multi-faculty, huge and attractive establishment with the present strength of approximately 1500 students. Presently it is imparting education in the field of Arts, Commerce and Computer Science. Subjects of Home Science and Music (Vocal) were specially introduced in the curriculum of the college to encourage the girl students of the area. Hailing its wonderful progress and overall performance the Punjabi University, Patiala declared this college as the “Model College” of the university in the year 1996.
Keeping in mind the requirements of the modern education system the College started imparting Job Oriented Computer Education from the year 1996-97. Our college was among the first three colleges of the University to have introduced Post Graduate Diploma in Computer Applications. To keep pace with the changing trends in the educational scenario, where Computer Education is becoming the order of the day, the college introduced Bachelor of Computer Education (B.C.A.) from the year 2001-02.
Apart from these courses, the college introduced two vocational courses namely “Principles and Practices of Insurance” and “Tax Procedures and Practices” with the aim of increasing employability and marketability of its students. The college is also running successfully the newly introduced career oriented add on courses like “Spoken English”, “Agro Services” and “Environmental Education” from the year 2006-07. The college also plans to start a few more such courses namely “Human Rights”, “Information Technology” and “Computerised Accounting” from the next academic session.
The college has seen its dream fulfilled by introducing Post Graduate Courses in M. Sc. (IT) and M.A. (Punjabi) on regular basis from this year. In addition to these courses a Post Graduate Diploma in Dress Designing and Tailoring has also specially been introduced keeping in view the girls of this backward area.
The college management also plans to start courses in the fast emerging field of Bio-Technology as well as plans to start an Education College in the near future. Since the college caters to the educational needs of not only the local students but also students from the neighboring areas, it plans to build a Girls hostel.
To inculcate the reading habits the college also has a very big Library which has more than 22,000 books, more than 50 monthly magazines and journals. Apart from academics the college is also concerned about the overall personality development of its students. The college has huge sports infrastructure which includes Eight Lane Track, Squash Court, Swimming Pool, Tennis Court, Table Tennis Tables, Boxing Ring, Basket Ball Court and Multi-Station Gym. A number of students have benefited from these facilities and the students have won laurels for the college. To spread the feelings of brotherhood and national integration the college also offers N.C.C., N.S.S. and Youth Welfare activities.
On the basis of its infrastructure, content and extent of courses offered, one can rightly say that this institution which is growing by leaps and bounds, presents a blend of professional and vocational education with traditional courses in Arts and Commerce.
