The Newfoundland and Labrador Section of the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) was founded in the 1960s, when the Newfoundland Geoscience Community was fairly small.

We exist as a local group composed of members of all segments of the geoscience community, and many of our members are members of the National Body of the Geological Association of Canada. Membership in the National Body is not a requirement for membership in the Newfoundland Section, but it is strongly encouraged. Membership dues for the Newfoundland Section are nominal, and are generally collected in conjunction with any event that we sponsor. You can also become a member by paying the nominal fee. Contact us for details.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Section organizes a technical conference every year (generally in February) and an annual field trip (generally in September or October). We also publish the "Travellers Guide to the Geology of Newfoundland and Labrador", and other publications such as field trip guides. Each year we organize some social functions according to demand and enthusiasm. Our overall mandate is to provide a focal point for the growing Newfoundland and Labrador Geoscience Community, so that its members can get to know one another, understand the activities of different sections of the community, learn about their subject and (above all) enjoy themselves.

The local GAC executive is a volunteer group from different sections of the community. We depend on volunteer effort to make things happen, and we are always in need of help from existing and new members.
