The 2/4th Infantry was activated for the purpose of providing security for the Pershing nuclear missiles that were stationed in West Germany during the cold war. The 2/4th headquartered in Ludwigsburg-Kornwesthiem in 1970, then moved to Neu Ulm. While the 2/4th primary mission was to provide security for the Pershing missile, it also pursued a rigorous infantry training schedule as well. The 2/4th participated in major training exercises such as REFORGER and many Battalion and Brigade level training exercises at locations such as Baumholder, Hohenfels, Wildflecken, and Graffenweir. Most of the training exercises that the 2/4th participated in were usually held during the winter months at locations with grueling terrain. This training helped to prepare the 2/4th soldiers for the possibility of encounters with opposing military forces in the event of an activation of the missiles or an assault on the missile site itself. These were real possibilities during the cold war.
