The course, “Foundations of Moral Value,” introduces the student to the major ethical theories, namely, but not limited to, Aristotle, Kant and Mill. The study of these theories will consist of a close reading of the primary texts and class discussions. Since moral philosophy is also known as practical philosophy, the study of these moral theories will be carried out in view of the concrete life of the student, both private and public. Special attention will be given to the serious problem of moral degeneration besetting our country. In addition to the three major moral thinkers, the class will also study selected works of Plato, Thomas Aquinas, John Locke, Friedrich Nietzsche, and John Rawls that may suggest other ways of thinking and doing ethics.
