The Prince of Orange in Hall Street, Chelmsford used to be a traditional backstreet real ale pub until in the late 70's the pub was taken over by local entrepreneur Andy Barrett who expanded the bar and converted the upper floor to a second bar cum restaurant.

In a short period of time, word spread about the quality of the beer and food and its open door policy which transformed the pub into one of Chelmsford's great drinking and socialising centrepoints. At the height of its popularity it became a social mecca for suits, punks, bikers, hippies, heads, dreads and workers from the general business community. Despite this curious mix of styles, cultures, ages and outlooks there was never any trouble or friction between the disparate groups. This of course, gave the pub a certain notoriety which led it to be regarded as the pub your parents warned you about.

For many people it was their first experience of Chelmsford nightlife and many were attracted to the atmosphere and friendliness of the pub. To keep things fresh the pub would feature local bands and sets by DJ’s as well as holding themed nights and supporting local charities. The pub spawned many great characters who have since become part of local folklore.

IN 1997 the Prince of Orange finally ran out of steam and amid emotional scenes the pub finally closed its doors and became an Irish themed pub called O'Connor’s with a completely different atmosphere and clientele but with cleaner toilets!

THE REBIRTH OF THE PRINCE OF ORANGE
The Prince of Orange group was set up on Facebook as a result of a lunch time drink reminiscing about old times. A few photos and memories were posted on the site and then things began to happen. As word got round the group expanded and soon the site gained hundreds of members from all over the world and the photos and reminiscences increased accordingly. Such is the power of social networking.

Eventually it was decided that the virtual Prince of Orange should become a reality of sorts and in 2009 the first Prince of Orange Reunion was held at O’Connor’s the original site of the old pub after the management generously agreed to let the Irish themed pub become the Prince of Orange for a day.

The success of this first get together has led to the Prince of Orange Reunion becoming an annual event, fuelled by several generations of people whose enthusiasm and love for a pub that closed 16 years ago, remains undiminished.

There will never another pub like it.
