Government College of Science, Multan came into existence in June 1967 by the name of Government Superior Science College, Multan. It was one of five such colleges established by the then Government of West Pakistan to impart quality science education at division level in various parts of the country. The laboratories of this college were equipped with all the required instruments and apparatus keeping in view the importance of science education. The present college building was completed in 1970 and students in limited number (250) were given admission to B. Sc. (Honours) class in the same year. The college was affiliated with the Punjab University, Lahore initially and following subjects were introduced: English, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, and Economics. The name of the college was changed from Government Superior Science College to Government College of Science in August, 1973 and classes for F. Sc. (Pre-Medical), F. Sc. (Pre-Engineering) and F. Sc. (General Science Group) were initiated. In the same year B. Sc. (Pass) classes were also started to enable the students of this area to get quality science education at undergraduate levels. In 2005 M.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Chemistry classes were started and a huge amount was spent to equip the laboratories of the Department of Physics and the Department of Chemistry with the latest instruments and apparatus.
