Welcome to the Scottish Borders

From the rolling moors of the western shores, through rich agricultural land, threaded through by the glittering river Tweed and on to the craggy shores of the east around historic Berwick on Tweed; the Scottish Borders cover some 1800 square miles and are stuffed with fascinating heritage, culture, good food and great things to see and do.
A super spot for a cottage holiday, walkers, cyclists and riders love the Scottish Borders for the diversity of scenery and wildlife. The River Tweed offers some of the best fishing in the country and you’ll also find great golf courses, heritage and gardens to explore and enjoy.
Home to novelist Sir Walter Scott, author of Rob Roy and Ivanhoe, there’s oodles of great heritage on offer. The history of the Scottish Borders, or ‘Debatable Lands’, is a fascinating romp of royalty, brigands, long suffering villages and fortified towns. Amazingly enough, it’s reputed that the Scottish Border lands are sung about in ballads more than anywhere else on the planet, but with characters like Merlin and King Arthur, Robert the Bruce, William Wallace (Brave Heart) and Mary Queen of Scotts walking the pages of its colourful history we really shouldn’t be surprised!
Things to do in the Scottish Borders

As the national boundary ebbed and flowed, Berwick upon Tweed has been claimed by both England and Scotland in its time and it’s well worth discovering the bloodthirsty heritage of the Borders through its romantic ruins, castles, abbeys and fortified manors set amid the beautiful rolling landscape. Check out the Abbeys of Jedburgh, Melrose and Kelso; superb castles including Floors, Thirlestane and Neidpath on the banks of the Tweed. If you love history you really will be spoilt for choice in this region.
With seaside and countryside, east to west, there’s a huge range of great outdoor activities to choose from. The famous Roxburghe Estate is home of the Charles Church Scottish Seniors Open and golfing greats like Nick Faldo and Tony Jackling have trod many a green around the region’s fine courses with their superb views and stretches of water. Walkers are treated to moorland, woodland and riverside routes, plus there’s horse riding and many cycle routes, on and off road. Fishermen flock here for the superb salmon fishing on the River Tweed and trout in local lochs. A wonderful base for your cottage holiday, a break in the Scottish Borders won’t be easily beaten!
