An Ilaje town located on the North West boundary of Ondo State with Ogun States was founded by Kabiyesi Oba Jagbemi, the 9th AMAPETU of MAhin Kingdom a very long time ago. Atijere an important town in the kingdom has towns like Aboto, Igbo-Egunrin, Akata etc as her neighbouring towns and has had an unbroken linde of BAALES and later OLOJAS all of whom owe allegiance to the paramount ruler, Amapetu of Mahin, as the consenting and prescribed authourity.



1. UNDER THE BRITISH RULE

1.By the treaty of friendship and protection made at Aboto on the 24th October, 1885 between the Queen of England and Amapetu of Mahin, the Mahin Country (as it was then referred to) and the coast inclusive of Atijere came under Bristish rule.
2.Atijere Sanctuary of Freedom: One of the significant provisions of the 1885 British/Mahin Treaty which is only next to the of Lagos in the whole of Yorubaland was the abolition of slave trade. By this, a British flagstaff was hosted at Atijere as a sanctuary of FREEDOM.
3.On the 12th of November, 1895, the Laws of Colony of Lagos by the order of the Nigeria Legislative Council (NLC) were made applicable to the “Mahin country and coast” and the Island or land called Atijere and the area was administered by the District Commissioner in 1914.
4.In 1915, the Ilaje country which includes Atijere in the present Ilaje Local Government Area was incorporated into Ondo Province.
5.In 1928, the Waterside district of the Ondo division was formed into Okitipupa Division, in which, Atijere was one of the leading towns with several infrastructural facilities.


2. ATIJERE AS HEADQUARTERS OF ILAJE DISTRICT COUNCIL
1952

(a) EDUCATION: Two primary schools were established in the early 1900, the first secondary school in the whole Ilaje land (ILAJE GRAMMAR SCHOOL) was also established in Atijere in 1971.

(b) OCCUPATION: The major occupations of the people are Fishing, Lumbering, Farming and Trading. Atijere is one of the largest towns in the Riverine patronized by all tribes even up to the North.

(c) MINERAL RESOURCES: Large deposit of silica sand, Petroleum and Bitumen etc. are some of mineral resources Atijere blessed with.

(d) BANKING: There is a branch of Union Bank establish in the early 1980.

(e) SECURITY: A Police Station established since the colonial era has been complemented by the effective youth vanguard to serve the security needs of the community.

(f) POPULATION: By the 2006 Census figure and projection, Atijere has a population of about 35,000 people.



JUDICIAL PROCESSES: The Grade ‘D’ Magistrate Court situated at Atijere for all villages on the main Atijere Lagoon, West of Aboto and from the town and villages to the North (Itebu Kunmi Madagbayu, Imoluwa, Igbo-Egunrin., Igbolomi, Igbobi and Mahintedo.
