7 RAR was formed at Puckapunyal Victoria on 1 September 1965.

The Battalion served twice in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam. First tour commenced in April 1967 and the second from Fedruary 1970 with both tours being of a twelve month duration.

On 3 December 1973 the Battalion was linked with 5 RAR to form 5/7 RAR.

On 3 December 2006 7 RAR was reformed with the de linking of 5/7 RAR at Robertson Barracks, Darwin.

Further deployments have been conducted since the Battalion reformed.

B Coy 5/7 RAR became B Coy 7 RAR whilst deployed on Reconstruction Task Force 1 (RTF 1) Afghanistan.
1 PL, A Coy provided the Mechanised Platoon for Timor Leste Battle Group 5 commencing in late 2007.
A Coy, less 1 PL, deployed to Baghdad, Iraq as SECDET 13 in 2008.
7 RAR Battle Group, 1st Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force (MRTF 1) deployed to Afghanistan for 9 months in 08/09.
