Mission Christmas Service Project - 2012

Here is a note describing their needs from the Mission:

"We are working on getting the Christmas service projects organized right now. So far we will be making visits to 2 Rest Homes, 2 Orphanages and 1 school in the Polochic.

The rest homes will be in Peten and here in the Capitol, the Orphanages will be in Salama and here in the Capitol and the School is in Chulac in the Polochic. WE are still looking for one more opportunity here in the Capitol. The one orphanage in the Capitol may turn into a rest home due to restrictions of the orphanage (We will have to wait and see.)

Last year we found that not only were these projects good for the people who received the service but the interaction for the missionaries helped the missionaries be a little less homesick too. We were proud of all of them and their interaction with the people. We are hoping that everything goes as well as it did last year.

The rest homes are not like the rest homes in the United States. They are places where people go who have no place else to go. Most of the people who work in these facilities are volunteers. The needs of the rest homes are pretty basic: food, socks and toothbrushes, razors etc. The needs of the orphanages are the same as they were last year. The ages of the children are from 1 year old to 17 or 18 and there are both boys and girls at both places. Little cars and trucks, stuffed animals, the yoyo's were a big hit for the older boys, journals for older girls, everything last year was just wonderful...They don't have anything so everything is great. We will also be giving them toothbrushes and socks. The school that we will be helping this year is in the poorest area in our mission and in the poorest place in that area. They often do not have paper to write on so as I said, anything would be great. The truth is, none of these people or places are expecting anything so anything that they receive is so gratefully received. We will be putting together little bags of candy, etc. with the toothbrushes —that doesn't seem very consistent does it— and socks,...

Buying things in Guatemala such as food, toothbrushes, etc is not too difficult if we start soon enough, but buying toys and things like that is very difficult and usually very expensive.

This sounds like so much! Do not worry because if we don't do anything but visit with everyone in these facilities every person is so happy to see the missionaries. I hope that this is helpful. I appreciate your help SO MUCH! Please do not feel pressured in any way.
