The Department of Chemistry was established in 1911 under the leadership of Prof. H.B. Duncliffe. The foundation of the present building was laid down in 1926. The department offers B.Sc. (Hons) and M.Sc. programmes in Chemistry as well in Industrial Chemistry along with M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes in Chemistry. The intake in B.Sc. (Hons) Chemistry and M.Sc. Chemistry are 120 and 60 respectively, while the intake in B.Sc. (Hons) Industrial and M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry are 30 and 25 respectively. The department also impart teaching in chemistry as subsidiary subjects to students of B.Sc.(Hons) in Physics, Mathematics, Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany, Geology, Geography and Industrial Chemistry. There are 1244 students in B.Sc. (Hons), 120 in M.Sc. Chemistry and 45 in M.Sc. Industrial Chemistry. The current strength of M.Phil and Ph.D. students is 95. The department has well equipped research labs and an instrumentation centre. The department has 34 faculty members actively engaged in research activities in the research areas of Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. The department has produced large number of M.Phil and Ph.D. (82) during the last five years publishing 284 research papers in national and international journals of repute. The department is funded under SAP (DRS-I) scheme. A number of research projects from agencies such as UGC, CSIR, DST, UP-CST, DAE-CSR, TWAS, IUC-DAEF and Volkswagen Foundation Germany etc., have been sanctioned to the chemistry department. The department is going to complete 100 years of its existence in 2011, thus a befitting occasion to celebrate its centenary by holding an international conference.
