Ken Loach's film The Spirit of 45 showed how people had united together to build houses, create a health service, improve the transport system and provide a social security safety net. The central idea was common
ownership where production and services were to benefit everyone and the few should not get rich to the detriment of everyone else. This belief and determination to make a better world was the Spirit of 45.
It is time to remember it today.
The welfare state is being dismantled, the health service under attack, house building has ground to a halt, and transport is in chaos. Whilst millions of ordinary people have seen their living standards eroded, the top 1% has seen their proportion of national income triple to 14% in the last 30 years. The Labour Party is not providing a strong opposition to austerity and instead advocates its own brand of frugality and privatisation.
Support Ken Loach's appeal to bring together those who wish to defend the Welfare State and present an alternative strategy to austerity to benefit all.
