Biertan locality lays in the middle of the Transylvanian plateau ,in the North of the Sibiu county,at equal distance between the cities Medias and Sighisoara.
Biertan is documentary testified for the first time in 1283,along with other 7 villages, inhabited in that period by the Saxons of Transylvania,in a document about the taxes demanded to the Catholic priests from the Transylvanian - Saxon communities by the Catholic Capital from Alba Iulia.
Biertan is situated in a hilly area,on the left side of the Tarnava Mare river.In the centre of the locality the Biertan spring flows in the Richis spring,the houses and the access ways being situated along these springs.

Access Ways
From North ,Biertan is accessible on the district road DJ 141B (paved)a branch of the national road DN14 Medias- Sighisoara.
Towards South DJ141B links the Richis villageand the route Medias-Mosna-Agnita.
Towards East the communal road DC24(not modernized) makes the connection with Copsa Mare village and towards west DC 22 connects Biertan to the Dupus - Atel village.
The nearest railway station from where you can get fast/express trains is Medias railway station, and for the slow trains there is a nearer railway station , CF Dumbraveni station,at only 9 km,road access from Biertan.

Biertan is an important handycraft, wine-growing area. Biertan was the center of the Evangelic Diocese for over 300 years.
Since the Middle Ages in the downtown Biertan had a commun market used as a weekly fair until the World War II. In the 50s the market was turned into a park, and the place for the weekly fair was moved somwhere else.This fair was held twice a year,on 21st October and on 14th April
