Dagestan located on East North part of the Caucasus, characterizes by unique ethnic diversity: there are living about 30 indigenous ethnic groups with different languages, traditions, culture. Total size of these ethnics varies from 350,000 to 400. Some ethnics so small by sizes that limits to one village. All these ethnics are living in remote highland region (except one -ethnic Kumiks that are aboriginal lowlanders). Archeological and genetic data obtained there showed that Dagestan indigeneous ethnics are living in same highland region more than 8-10K years. The group named 'Dagestan Genetic heritage' I created to describe how such unique ethnic diversity is related to the genetic diversity. My research group at VIGG RAS started genetic study of these ethnic groups in 1979 using different genetic system -immunological, biochemical, DNA markers, including genome-wide AFFX SNPs. Our study showed that all Dagestan ethnics are genetically closest to each other that support their genetic origin from one common ancestral population exisited about 8K ago. Next level of genetic similarities Dagestan ethnics demonstrated to nighboring Caucasus ethnics, as well as to the Northern European and Near Eastern groups...Welcome to our DGH group -to read, learn and to discuss about known and still unknown issues about Dagestan and Caucasus in general ethnic populations genetics!
