Introduction

Esigodini, colonially known as Essexvale, until 1982, is the district administrative centre for the villages that fall under the uMzingwane Constituency, among other villages. It is situated 43 km from Bulawayo along the Bulawayo – Beitbridge road and the rail way line running through it. The name Inzalo Yase Sigodini (ISG) is premised on this administrative centre, notwithstanding the fact that the group is comprised of members from the ±18 wards that constitute the uMzingwane Constituency.

The villages spread down the plains, rocky hills and mountainous landscapes and follow Insezi, uMzingwane, Ncema, Mbilamboya Rivers, the main tributaries to Inyankuni, Ncema and uMzingwane Dams. The villages are connected by a good road network. However the current state of the roads makes it a challenge to access all villages especially during the rainy season. These villages are the birth place and the true identity of the members of the "Inzalo Yase Sigodini Group (ISG)".

Despite high poverty levels, the general population believes in the philosophy that "Every child should go to school" in order to break the poverty-cycle. There are 37 primary schools, 13 Secondary Schools and one tertiary institution (figures to be verified) in the uMzingwane Constituency. The schools produce quality students who then compete with the whole nation to be enrolled in limited state higher education institutions. Of great concern is the intermediate group that does not excel to the University or Technical Colleges requirements. Esigodini Agricultural College is the only tertiary training institution in the district and there are no other skills development institutions to cater for those that have just complete Ordinary Level.

The majority of the villages are serviced by shops and a few have sufficient basic social services. This means that people have to spend time and limited disposable income on transport in order to access basic social services. Where services are available they either lack routine maintenance or qualified personnel.

Inzalo Yase Sigodini Group (ISG) has realized the importance of being pro-active in initiating development in the community. The majority of projects intended for communities have failed mainly because they are crafted by people who do not have a clear understanding of the needs of the community. ISG is composed of “Inzalo yase Sigodini”, people who have passion for the development of their home area, and have a clearer understanding of what the community needs through trends that have taken place over the past years. The group is there to initiate development, ensure that the direction of development is for the benefit of the community and it is done by the community.
