We are wasting millions of pounds of tax payers’ money by keeping people in prison!

It would be less costly to execute someone; for example, someone commits murder and gets sentenced to 10 years in prison, it costs us tax payers 500,000 pounds. If the convicted were executed instead it would cost us an awful lot less because we would not have to pay for them to stay alive in prison.

If murderers get executed, they are no longer a danger to anyone; however, keeping murderers alive, makes them a danger to people, to other prisoners, prison staff and lawyers etc. Moreover, if they get released, they are a danger to public.

Let’s talk about Jamie Bulgers’ killers, Jon Venables and Robert Thomson, who have since been freed from prison after serving only eight years. They were given new identities, a new home and other benefits, which is paid by our tax payers money. The punishment they received for this murder was a joke because Jamie Bulgers’ life was worth more than eight years in my opinion.

How about Garry Newlove's killers who were sentenced between 12 to 17 years in prison. Now, that is no deterrent. It is insulting to Garry Newlove and his family. Justice was not served for Garry Newlove’s life, for a meager sentencing of 12 to 17 years.

The death penalty was abolished in the U.K. in 1969 for murder. It was suspended in 1965 because there was a wrongful execution in 1964 (one year before the death penalty was suspended in the U.K.). The murder rate per 100,000 was 0.63 in 1964; when the death penalty got abolished the murder rate was 0.68 per 100,000. In 2007 the murder rate was 1.62 per 100,000. Ever since the death penalty has been abolished, our murder rate is rising each year.

In my opinion, If the death penalty was brought back the crime rate would go down because it’s a restraint. For example, if Garry Newlove’s killers would have known that they would have to give their lives, instead of a few years in prison, they would have probably thought twice before they killed him. Keep in mind the point earlier -- the reason this law is no longer permitted and also overlooked. The reason why the death penalty was abolished was because someone had been wrongly executed. In the 60’s forensic evidence wasn't reliable but now technology has come along way and forensic evidence is reliable. All of the scientists and teachers that I have spoken to about forensic evidence agree with me that it is very reliable. My point intended for this group is that the death penalty should only be executed if the convicted criminal can be proved beyond any doubt that they have committed murder, pedophilia or terrorism.

Most countries that put into practice the death penalty such as Japan, China and Saudi Arabia, have a much lower crime rate than we do because people think twice before they commit these crimes. In Japan the murder rate was 0.50 per 100,000 in 2007. In Saudi Arabia, the murder rate was 0.92 per 100,000 in 2007. You may ask yourself, why is it not a deterrent in America? The reason is because the death penalty is not enforced properly; One in 325 people convicted of murder get executed! That is nearly no restriction. I will bet any money that if everyone convicted of murder got the death penalty in America, the crime rate would be much lower.

Convicts serving life behind bars, such as Clarence Ray Allen, have succeeded in directing other murders on their behalf to go out and murder. Now if Clarence Ray Allen had been executed he wouldn't have been capable to do so and those murders could have prevented.

In conclusion, the death penalty is a deterrent and it does discourage people from committing future crimes. The death penalty does take a life but it is outweighed by the many lives it saves. Based on facts, it prevents murder rates.
