Trenton was a happy soon to be 1 year old boy who was unknowingly to us being abused at his biological mother's house. We found out later that his biological mom knew that the abuse was taking place, yet she turned a blind eye to it. The day before Trenton's first birthday his biological mother left him in the care of her fiancé and went to work. While she was at work, Andrew Basinski allegedly smothered Trenton in an attempt to make him fall asleep to nap. He allegedly had him wrapped so tightly in a blanket and against his chest that he did not realize that Trenton had stopped crying because he had stopped breathing. When Andrew realized that Trenton was unresponsive he called 911. The lack of oxygen to Trenton's brain caused him to start having seizures and he remained unconscious. He was flown from the Cadillac Mercy Hospital to the Helen Devos Children's Hospital where he spent his first birthday unconscious. Allegedly, Andrew Basinski soon admitted to police officers that he had caused Trenton's injuries. As a result of Andrew's actions Trenton has over 75% permanent brain damage. He is no longer to eat on his own and now relies on a G-Tube for Feeding. He did pass his swallow study on February 6th of 2013 and will be able to start feeding therapy soon. The ultimate goal is to use the G-Tube only for medications and to supplement his nutritional needs at night. He is unable to process thought, sight, sounds, and touch correctly. He has limited intentional movement ability and has a physical therapist that comes to our home once a week to help him improve. He also is starting vision therapy and a specialist will come out every 2 months to give us new ideas for Trenton and to make sure he is progressing well. On February 20th he passed his hearing test. He is able to hear great out of both ears. Now that his biological father and his (step) mom have custody of him he is showing signs of improvements. He has started to recognize the voices of our family members. The grim outcome the doctors gave us in September of 2012 is so far off from what he is doing. He is a miracle. We don't know what the future will hold for Trenton, but with the right resources, an abundance of love and dedication, we are praying for the best possible outcome for him.
