Celebrate and Support Rotherham

Following a meeting organised by Rotherham Unite Against Fascism (UAF) on Monday 27 October about the return to Rotherham of the English Defence League (EDL), the decision was made to create a group to “Celebrate and Support Rotherham”.

The initial focus of this group became the promotion of the Unity Vigil in All Saints Square in Rotherham on 8 November.

The Unity Vigil was an important success and could mark a turning point in terms of the people of Rotherham reclaiming All Saints Square and the centre of Rotherham from extremist groups that want to promote racism and division in Rotherham.

This group was formed initially for a time-limited period and the existence of this group has succeeded in creating a focal point to Celebrate and Support Rotherham. The existence of this group will continue up to:

• the publication of “Voices of Despair, Voices of Hope” – target date Saturday 21 February.

• The next Unity Vigil proposed for Saturday 28 February.

Our work has barely begun in terms of the original two aims of:

• tackling the scourge of Child Sexual Exploitation
• tackling the scourge of racism in Rotherham

Let’s do everything we can to make the Unity Vigil on Saturday 28 February a very very special day in the life of Rotherham, six months on from the publication of the Jay report.

Further Information about the activities of this group can be found on:

The group exists to promote “Good Belonging”. Starting with work based in Northern Ireland since January 2014, “Good Belonging” is defined on the REAL website:

‘Good belonging’

being confident in the community I belong to

and

wanting to celebrate the diversity that comes from the best in other communities.

Everyone needs a sense of belonging
