The theme for this year is My Voice. Our Story and will be an overarching theme for a series of dialogues. It encourages the active expression of youth voice and opinion in a way that affirms youth agency while simultaneously recognizing the diverse stories and experiences of our shared past. Through engaging in dialogue with youth from different social realities and experiences young people have the opportunity to learn from and exchange knowledge with their peers. It is in the exchanges between people in the moment that meaning develops, not within either party’s head, but rather, in the interpersonal space between them. Utterances obtain meaning not only from the speaker, but also from the listener.
The project is comprised of six workshops with a focus on leadership development, the past, present, future, memory and memorialisation and active citizenry. In conjunction with these workshops, the youth will participate in four public dialogue sessions with one of these being the 10th annual Ashley Kriel Youth Memorial Lecture. The project will culminate in a youth imbizo and a youth publication.
