Global Perspectives and Social Media for Local Change
Course Description
Through this unique course, you will be developing critical skills needed for today’s globally-connected workforce while engaging with students in Seattle, WA at the University of Washington, Bothell campus using a wide range of tools, including student-produced videos, Skype and using literature, memoir, short essay and music lyrics interpretation to learn about our cultures and those of our international partners. Employers today are looking for students with critical thinking and time management skills and increasingly, employees who have experience in collaborating and solving problems across diverse cultures and in virtual teams. This course will help you develop those talents, through a highly interactive learning process.
Students will apply this learning in new cultural contexts through technology-enhanced virtual exchanges and working in small global teams to solve real-world problems. We will be guiding students to learn how to work through and adapt to technical and cultural challenges. Students will have practice in finding alternative solutions when awkward cultural moments or technical difficulties (Skype call breakdowns, video editing hiccups, etc.) arise, nurturing the development of mental flexibility, cross-cultural understanding and effective problem-solving.
This course will help you build the basic foundations for developing these skills. We will be engaging with others who do not necessarily share our cultural lens, and as we explore our similarities and differences, we will foster a gentle culture of debate. We will use social media to develop core workplace skills such as collaboration and cross-cultural communication skills that result in better problem solving, and ultimately, improved social conditions. You will likely learn as much about yourself, your talents, and your hidden assumptions as you will about others as you connect across countries and cultures.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. More effectively communicate among highly diverse cultures and individuals through understanding, identifying and practicing critical interpersonal skills
2. More effectively communicate among highly diverse cultures and individuals through understanding, identifying and practicing with key interactive media tools (live video, student-produced video, Face book)
3. More effectively problem-solve in teams, through an understanding of group dynamics and effective collaboration skills
4. Write, research and present more effectively.
