Diversity and Pluralism

Majority and national language of Chitral is Khowar which is widely spoken. However there are more than a dozen other languages which are spoken by different communities living in different parts of the district.

History

Chitral was an ancient Kingdom , Aryan graves which are said to be 2500 years old were recently discovered in Chitral town . During 1800s the Kingdom was expanded and Chitral were able to expand control over districts in nothern areas as far as Gilgit. Kalam in Swat is called Bashqar in Chitral and was part of Chitral till 1940s. Chitral also had influence over Nooristan and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan where the tribes recognized ruler of Chitral as their suzerain and used to pay tribute. Chitral became part of British Indian Empire in 1895 and lost much of its territories to Maharaja Kashmir and Afghanistan due to the British government's agreements with the respective governments.In 1947 Chitral became the first state to join Pakistan. The first written and democratic constitution of Chitral was promulgated in 1953 which is called the "Chitral State Constitutional Order 1953" .Democratic reforms were introduced in Chitral and absolute monarchy was transformed into constitutional monarchy with the ruler retaining symbolic power and executive powers were transferred to elected Chitral State Executive Council. All taxes which Chitralis had been paying to state since centuries were waived off once forever in 1953.
The State of Chitral was abolished through Marshal Law order by General Yahya Khan in 1969.
