Tiong Bahru used to be a hilly and swampy area full of graves and over time, squatters. In the Hokkien dialect, the word ‘Tiong’ refers to ‘death’, while the Malay word ‘Bahru’ means ‘new’. Thus, Tiong Bahru means ‘New Cemetery’. Although many of its graves have now been cleared away, not many are aware that the grave of prominent pioneer Tan Tock Seng still resides there.

The literal translation of its name, however, does not remotely reflect its present image. With the neighbourhood’s unmistakeable charm, a treasure trove of good food and a variety of specialty shops, Tiong Bahru is becoming increasingly known as a ‘trendy destination’ for locals and tourists alike.

With many sights to see, we do hope you’ll enjoy the day with us!
